The Death of Edgar Allan Poe

No other writer in our lineup of ten literary modules this semester has so much myth and fantastical tales surrounding him than Edgar Allan Poe.

Who or What was he?

A drug addict?
Couldn't handle booze?
An incestuous pervert?
A loser who couldn't finish a job?

Or was he a talented writer and practical businessman who knew that twisted stories were marketable to a reading public thirsty for tales from the dark side?

Well, English 1002 (or anybody else happening along this blog), what do you think may be the answer to those questions?

Don't simply base your judgment on reading "The Tell-Tale Heart." Do some research and backgound investigation. Look at the big picture. Then come back with an informed response. By all means, post your comments!

From what I remember of Poe from many years ago, I have to say that his biography colored the tenor and subject of his writing. He endured many deaths of loved ones in his life and was very familiar with the effects of TB. The blood! The blood!

He was also enthralled with much younger women as he married a cousin who was only like 15 or 16 if I remember properly--that bit could be off some. What can we say? Do not our own passions and experiences fill our own writing?

Thanks for joining out blog, Jared. Good to hear from you.

I'd like for my 1002 class to know that the celebrity Jared Wall (see the preceding comment) is a graduate student at LSU in Baton Rouge in the College of Education. He's a friend and a "techy" colleague whom I got to know out in Northern California at a workshop last summer. Thanks for adding to English 1002, Jared. Visit often!

This also serves as a reminder to my students that this blog is read as far and wide as the Internet reaches. It's not lke the Blackboard Discussion Board, which is a closed forum. When you post here, you've gone public!

Ah, the marvels of technology!

Poe did indeed endure many deaths of his family before the horrible death of his own. There's no wonder why he would say, while lying in his death bed, that only a friend would blow his brains out. From my point of view, he was very well educated but what is a life without a loving family. I'll get back after I read more into his life.
